USG Programming and Software Engineering Foundations (Start: Oct. 2025)

With the university course "Programming and Software Engineering Foundations" (30 ECTS), the winter semester 2025/2026 will offer a practice-oriented education that focuses on the development, high-quality implementation and management of software applications using modern methods and tools.

Modern software engineering methods are revolutionising numerous disciplines by automating processes, promoting the seamless networking of systems and enabling the integration of innovative technologies.

- Duration: 1 year (30 ECTS)
- Degree: Certificate with certificate from the University of Innsbruck
- Who for: Professionals who want to study while working
- Language of instruction: German (coding, documents etc. partly in English)
- Planned expandability from autumn 2026: +30 ECTS with the degree of Academic Expert in Software Engineering
You will acquire a sound knowledge of the fundamental concepts of object-oriented programming and will be able to independently develop and implement algorithmic solutions, systematically identify errors and convert them into efficient and well-structured programmes.

You will learn how to systematically develop, maintain, test and continuously improve software solutions by using modern methods, principles and tools of Software Engineering. Artificial intelligence also plays an important role here.

- VU Modern Software Engineering Processes & Methodologies
In the final module, you will independently implement a software product from conception through development to acceptance . You will get to know important steps in software development in a practical way and apply the skills you learnt in the Modern Software Engineering Processes & Methodologies module.

Unterrichtskonzeption
The teaching concept is based on the blended learning approach, which combines the advantages of face-to-face events and digital learning. Each course (with the exception of the lab) lasts exactly 5 weeks and has the same programme for the first 4 weeks:
- Specialist keynote lecture: Introduction to the weekly topic
- Individual learning phase: In-depth work with materials (including regular consultation hours)
- Joint work: Summary of content, consolidation & repetition, reflection (on the technology campus)
- Self-assessment: Quiz for independent knowledge assessment
In the last week, the block concludes with a written exam.

- Prerequisite: at least a general university entrance qualification (Matura) with professional experience
- Participation fee: € 4,800 (covers the costs for qualified trainers, administrative expenses and the necessary infrastructure)
