Instead of the usual open day and various company exhibitors, this time we started with a Capture The Flag competition at 2.30 pm. In this "escape game for nerds", the participants had to solve fun puzzles in teams - in the areas of web, binary, network and crypto - in competition with other student teams. The "HelloTest" team won the prize for the best first semester team. The "Boolshit" team not only scored the most points in the Best Bachelor Team category, but also secured the prize for the Best Team Overall.
Following the CTF competition, the keynote speech by Simon Peyton Jones, inventor and developer of the Haskell programming language, started at 16:00. Simon talked about the creation and realisation of Haskell, including some of the research and development challenges that had to be overcome. The audience had the opportunity to ask questions at any time via the chat area of the streaming platform.
After the keynote, Jan Beutel, who recently joined the Department of Computer Science, introduced himself and his new research group Networked Embedded Systems. This was followed by a brief insight into the Institute's robotics laboratory by Simon Haller, before Antonio Rodriguez-Sanchez provided information on the subject of Erasmus.
The Computer Science student representatives also made their contribution to this year's inday students with an entertaining and informative video.
The last official item on the programme was the presentation of the Best Bachelor and Best Master Awards and the presentation of the winning theses:
- Anna Brandstätter received the Best Bachelor Award for her work "Real-time rendering of realistic surfaces using subsurface scattering"
- Martin Plattner received the Best Master Award for his work "Generalising BlockSci to Cross-Chain Analyses of Forked Ledgers"
The inday students 2020 concluded with a virtual after-hours party.
The Department of Computer Science would like to thank everyone who contributed to the success of inday students 2020!
