Vortrag Florian Maizner - Conference 500 Jahre Sacco di Roma: Plünderungen in der Neuzeit

At the conference "500 Jahre Sacco di Roma: Plünderungen in der Neuzeit", organised by the Institut für Geschichtswissenschaften und Empirische Kulturwissenschaften at the University of Innsbruck, Florian Maizner presents the longevity of the entangled antiquity. His talk on "Die Plünderung Konstantinopels 1453 als Ende der Antike" connects ancient settlement, myths of divine intervention, and symbolism of a city. After the looting of Constantinople, the Ottoman sultan worked on holding up the city's heritage. While the late medieval western Europeans were in shock, similarities can be pointed out to antiquity. After the mythic fall of Troy, Rome claimed to be a successor. After the shift of power in the eastern Mediterranean post 1453, a similar movement westwards began. But this time, leaving the ancient world and going further: towards the Age of Discovery and European Expansion.
