PhD project
Hadrianvs.Avgvstvs - Legitimation und Vergangenheits(re)konstruktion eines römischen Princeps
The topic of the dissertation project is the often materially tangible and, in their form, extraordinary references of Hadrian to the first Roman Princeps, Augustus.
With models form anthropology and cultural sociology, which I use as analytical tools, I analyse the behaviour of the Roman senatorial elite and the Principes with a special focus on Hadrian.
My assumption is that the hadrianic references on Augustus were meant to show the effort Hadrian invested in being Princeps and, therefore, he expected to be credited with respect for his merits for the res publica. This was needed to justify Hadrian’s leadership towards the acceptance groups of the Imperium Romanum.
To accomplish this, Hadrian referred e.g. with building activities on the Augustan age.
This thesis aims to explain the behaviour of Hadrian in general and his references on Augustus in particular. The theoretical framework will show the necessities of the senatorial field in which the Principes were bound to operate. Moreover, it will be shown how the Principes needed to act to gain and keep the support of the crucial acceptance groups.
