Cultural Transformation and Multilingualism

The research area “Cultural Transformation and Multilingualism” focuses on phenomena of cultural transformation such as individualization, transnationalization, neoliberalization, and digitalization, as well as their intersections. These are explored in an educational context, with a particular emphasis on multilingualism. We adopt a perspective on cultures of education, upbringing, and knowledge, placing cultural practices at the center. We investigate how concepts of education, knowledge, language, and culture are reflected in (historical and current) educational policy decisions, in educational programs and reforms, as well as curricula. We also examine how language and education policy content is interpreted, recontextualized, and transformed into pedagogical practices. Multilingualism, linguistic practices, and language education—central components of socio-political and educational discourse—constitute a key focus of this research area.
