Information about the Admission Procedures for the Master's Programme Psychotherapy for The Academic Year 2026/2027

The Master's programme in Psychotherapy is a joint programme offered by the Leopold Franzens University of Innsbruck and the Medical University of Innsbruck.
The admission procedure and enrolment for all applicants is organised and carried out by the University of Innsbruck.
If you are interested in the Master's programme in Psychotherapy, please note the following conditions: The University of Innsbruck and the Medical University of Innsbruck are offering a total of 100 places for the Master's programme in Psychotherapy in the 2026/2027 academic year. To obtain one of these places, you must complete the following steps:
Admission procedure – process:
Electronic registration and cost contribution payment 2 March to 7 April 2026
- Registration/applicationfor the admission procedure prior to enrolment.
- Enter your details into the system, enter your OSA code from the University of Vienna and then fill out the statistics sheet.
- Select your quota. More information: Kontingentregelung
- Then pay the fee of €80 to complete your application for the Master's programme in Psychotherapy at the University of Innsbruck. Please note that in the last four days before the registration deadline, the fee can only be paid by credit card or instant bank transfer in order to prevent late payments.
- Once you have completed the data entry and paid the fee, you can print out your registration confirmation.
Admission can only be granted after successful completion of the entrance examination. Detailed information on the required documents can be found at Master's Programme – University of Innsbruck
Please note that it is only possible to begin your studies in the winter semester 2026/2027.
We kindly ask applicants who require special aids or assistance (e.g. severe visual impairment, hearing aids, barrier-free access, other physical or mental impairments) to contact the Office of the Disability Officer by 7 April 2026 at the latest so that we can make the necessary arrangements. If more than 100 applicants register for the Master's programme in Psychotherapy at the University of Innsbruck within the specified registration period, a written entrance examination will be held on 6 July 2026. You will be informed of the next steps by email after the registration deadline.
The admission of applicants for the joint Master's programme in Psychotherapy is based on the admission procedure in accordance with §§ 6 ff.
The admission procedure takes place once per academic year and applies to both the winter and summer semesters. It is only possible to start your studies in the winter semester.
The admission test consists of four parts, each of which comprises several items. An item is a question or task with several possible answers, of which exactly one is correct (single choice) or one or more may be correct (multiple choice).
Here are sample items to illustrate how the questions are asked. Please note that these are not examples of exercises, but an overview of the type of questions.
A. Knowledge:
- Test section: Basic knowledge of psychotherapy science:
This part of the test assesses prior knowledge from the specified test literature on fundamentals relevant to psychotherapy science, in particular fundamentals of research and scientific methodology, psychological and medical-psychiatric fundamentals, fundamentals of psychotherapy, and fundamentals of psychological diagnostics.

B. Skills, knowledge and abilities:
- Verbal-analytical comprehension section:
This part of the test assesses text comprehension, verbal-analytical comprehension, and verbal assessment and judgement skills.
- Social-emotional skills test section:
This part of the test assesses social-emotional reasoning, social sensitivity and the recognition of emotions.
- English language skills test:
This part of the test assesses your comprehension of English-language texts.
C. Assessment
Correctly answered items are scored with a score of 1, incorrectly answered or unanswered items with 0.
The total score used for ranking is calculated from the weighted sum of the four test scores and is determined according to the following formula:
- Test section value: Basic knowledge of psychotherapy science: 70 %
- Test section value for verbal-analytical comprehension: 15,75 %
- Test section value for social-emotional skills: 9 %
- Test section value for English language skills: 5,25 %
Information on the procedure of the entrance test on 06 July 2026
The entrance exam for the Master's programme in Psychotherapy will take place on 06 July 2026 at Olympiaworld Innsbruck.
The meeting point for all applicants with a valid registration is between the main entrance and the WEST entrance (at ground level, NOT accessible via the staircase). If you arrive by car, please park in the underground car park of the Tivoli Stadium.
The admissions and check-ins will take place at 3 entrances. The duly registered test participants were assigned and informed of the exact time and admission on June 19, 2026 by message to the LFU:online mailbox.
All correspondence can be found in the LFU:online under the tab "My Forms" "Inbox".
Have your registration confirmation, as well as a valid photo ID (passport, identity card, driver's license...) ready.
We ask that you only take permitted items with you to the test: ID, registration confirmation, fineliners written in black, drinks/snacks and wallet.
All other items (bag, backpacks, jacket, coat, electronic devices such as watches, mobile phone, etc., own paper or pennal) should stay at home if possible or must be placed under the table in a bag provided for this purpose. Telephones must be switched off at all costs!
You have 3 hours (180 minutes) for the test itself.
Positive participation in the written entrance test, as well as the achievement of a ranking place within the existing 100 study places (University of Innsbruck and Medical University of Innsbruck), is necessary in order to be admitted to the degree programme. Please note, however, that in addition to the successful completion of the entrance test, proof of the general university entrance qualification (e.g. Austrian secondary-school leaving certificate, German certificate of general higher education entrance qualification) must be provided for the actual admission to the degree programme.
You will be informed about the result of the test after two weeks at the latest via LFU:online.
Written entrance test for the Master's programme in Psychotherapy on 06 July 2026
The registration for the admission procedure prior to enrollment in the Master’s degree program in Psychotherapy expired on April 7, 2026.
239 applicants registered properly.
The number of applicants registered by April 7, 2026 exceeds the number of study places (100) specified in the performance agreements of the University of Innsbruck and the Medical University of Innsbruck. Therefore, a written entrance test is required.
The written test will take place on July 6, 2026. Further information regarding the procedure, location, time, etc. will be provided to all properly registered applicants via LFU:online no later than June 22, 2026.
For organizational reasons, we kindly ask you to notify us in writing if you will not participate in the entrance test prior to admission to the Master’s degree program in Psychotherapy at the University of Innsbruck.
All properly registered applicants were informed via a message on LFU:online (under the tab “My Forms” → “Inbox”) on 10 April 2026. If you have not received a message despite successful registration, please contact aufnahmeverfahren@uibk.ac.at.
