Station Hintereis

The Station Hintereis is operated by the Department of Atmospheric and Cryospheric Sciences (University of Innsbruck) and is part of INTERACT (International Network for Terrestrial Research and Monitoring in the Arctic). The station was built in 1966 at an elevation of 3026 m just above the well studied glacier Hintereisferner and hosts a maximum number of eight persons. Explore the location in 360° on mapillary. The hut is only a samll shelter and does not provide laboratory facilities and electricity. The spring runs dry usually in August, thus water management must be taken into account. A gas system powers light, cooking and heating.
Access for researchers can be granted through the Department of Atmospheric and Cryospheric Sciences of the University of Innsbruck. Note, approaching the station means walking for several hours and includes crossing a glacier (Hintereisferner), thus necessary equipment and experience in glacier travelling is mandatory.
