Defining orography and vertical levels for ICON over the Alps

A couple of years ago, the Consortium for Small-Scale Modelling had decided to replace the COSMO model with the ICON model. While the German Weather Service is already successfully running ICON at the global and regional scale, the Swiss Federal Office for Meteorology and Climatology, MeteoSwiss, is still in the course of doing so. This presentation summarises “lessons learnt” from work conducted in the model development group at MeteoSwiss: While trying to implement a new vertical coordinate formulation, the ICON model held many surprises ranging from peculiarities in the underlying orography dataset to (in-)sensitivity to the vertical grid resolution in the boundary layer.
