  Present Position and Research Activities

Kurt Matzler is professor of Strategic Management at the University of Innsbruck and academic director of the Executive MBA at MCI in Innsbruck. His research interests are in the fields of Strategy, Innovation and Leadership. Before joining Innsbruck University he was professor at the University of Klagenfurt/Austria, Johannes Keppler University Linz/Austria, and the Free University of Bolzano/Italy.

Kurt Matzler was visiting scholar at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania and Bocconi University in Milan. He was visiting professor at Fairfield University, Connecticut (1998) and Southeast Missouri State University in 2001. Kurt Matzler is author of numerous papers in Journals like Strategic Management Journal, Global Strategy Journal, Journal of World Business, MIS Quarterly, Journal of Product Innovation Management, Journal of Management Information Systems, MIT Sloan Management Review, California Management Review, Long Range Planning, etc. Kurt Matzler is co-author of the German edition of “Innovator’s Dilemma” (2011, together with Clayton Christensen, Harvard Business School, according to the Economist the book is one of the six most important management books), Marketing Strategy (Prentice Hall, 2011), Digital Disruption (2016), Enduring Success (Palgrave McMillan, 2007), three other books in German language (one text book on Strategic Management), and editor of more than ten books in his research areas; he has published over 100 articles in peer-reviewed journals.

In 2009 Kurt Matzler was ranked among the top 20 emerging researchers in management and business administration in the German speaking world by the German newspaper “Handelsblatt”. In 2010 he received the Emerald Citation of Excellence Award for a paper on “Avatar-Based Innovation” in Technovation (together with Thomas Kohler and Johann Füller), and in 2012 the Tudor Rickards and Susan Moger Best Paper Award of „Creativity & Innovation Management“ together with Katja Hutter, Julia Hautz, Johann Füller and Julia Müller).

With more than 21,000 citations in Google Scholar, Kurt Matzler belongs to the top 20 strategy researchers in Europe and to the top 40 in the world.

Kurt Matzler is partner of IMP (, an international consulting company, with its headquarters in Innsbruck, Austria.

Kurt Matzler is a passionate cyclist and a team finisher of the Race Across America 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. With his participation in RAAM, his Rotary team raised more than USD 3,000,000 in donations to eradicate Polio.
