Research

Power Electronics and Static Power Conversion in general is an engineering/scientific discipline that was introduced into practice on beginning of the 20th century. Today, on beginning of the 21st century, Power Electronics is part of our everyday life. We can find it in almost all applications; home appliances, automotive, multimedia, ICT, industry, transportation, military, space, etc., etc. Wherever and whenever we need to control power/energy flow without significant losses, we have to use power electronics. It would be very difficult, almost impossible to imagine today’s life without power electronics. Every segment of the life will be different. Power electronics & Static Power Conversion have contributed significantly to the global world economy. Invention of the IGBT has contribution to the global economy of more than 18 trillion of US$. Power Electronics and Power Semiconductors in general have contributed much more.

Innsbruck Power Electronics Lab (i-PEL), as a part of the Institute of Mechatronics, has been recently founded by Infineon Technologies AG, Austria and University of Innsbruck. Research activities are mainly focused on the cutting edge Power Semiconductors and Power Electronics in general.

  • Ultra-high power density & efficiency power converters,
  • High performance optimization and integration of switching mode power converters,
  • Power converter topologies: State of the art voltage and current source topologies, multi-cell interleaved converters, high power isolated dc-dc converters,
  • Application, control and driving techniques for cutting edge power semiconductor devices: IGBT, RB-IGBT, MOSFET, SiC JFET, SiC MOSFET, GaN....
  • Power converters applications: Variable speed drives, bidirectional rectifiers, active filters, UPS Converters and STATCOM devices,
  • Advanced energy storage devices & their applications (ultra-capacitors and batteries),
  • Control of power converters: Pulse width modulation (carrier based continuous and discontinuous modulation schemes), the current control (standard a/b and dq frame), dc side control (full and partial dc bus voltage and current control in dc-dc converters), active damping of ac and dc side variables.
