Minor "Translation: Translating and Interpreting"

The options for elective courses comprise 30 ECTS credits and can be chosen by regular students enrolled in bachelor's degree programmes at the University of Innsbruck, provided that the relevant curriculum allows for the completion of an elective course. Students enrolled in the bachelor's degree programme in Translation Studies are not eligible to enrol for these elective courses in "Translation: Translating and Interpreting".

Graduates of the elective courses in "Translation: Translating and Interpreting" are familiar with the differences and special features of the various forms, modes and settings of translation and have developed an awareness of the need for professional translation. They have gained an initial insight into the work of professional translators and interpreters as well as into translation studies.

SL Introduction to Translation Studies (2 ECTS credits)
Overview of relevant theoretical approaches from the past and present; teaching of essential knowledge of the linguistic, cognitive, communicative and other fundamentals of translation

PS Translation Studies (5 ECTS credits)
Systematic reflection on the cognitive, cultural, social and historical conditions of translation; teaching of the central topics and aspects in the current research debate; Introduction to the analysis of scientific publications; literature search; designing a presentation; writing scientific texts

Learning objective of compulsory module 1: Translation Studies
Knowledge of the elementary linguistic aspects of translation; oral and written presentation of prototypical translation studies problems and evaluation of proposed solutions

VU Translation-Based Analysis of Fictional Texts (5 ECTS credits)
Introduction to the specifics and translation-relevant analysis of fictional (including multimedia) texts

SL Translation as a Profession (2 ECTS credits)
Profession-specific introduction to the fields of work of translators

Practical course: Practice conference (1 ECTS credit)
Active participation as a listener in a full-day multilingual conference held at the Department of Translation Studies as part of the UE SIM II B language/A language course

Learning objective of compulsory module 2: Translation in practice
Knowledge of the different professional fields of transcultural communication, the tools for analysing and interpreting fictional texts of different genres, and a typical conference interpreting setting

Translation of general language texts; practice in translation processes using non-technical texts; practice in online research; introduction to technical aids using new media

UE Sight Translation English / French / Italian / Russian / Spanish – German (2.5 ECTS credits)
Basic skills in bilingual oral communication

Learning objective of compulsory module 3: Translation
Translation competence in the language pair with special consideration given to function-appropriate and text-type-appropriate translation and consideration of cultural specificity; independent use of current professional tools and translation technologies

UE Introduction to Interpreting (2.5 ECTS credits)
Teaching basic interpreting skills and strategies

UE Conference Interpreting English / French / Italian / Russian / Spanish – German (2.5 ECTS credits)
Teaching basic strategies for conference interpreting

UE Liaison Interpreting English / French / Italian / Russian / Spanish (2.5 ECTS credits)
Communication-appropriate reproduction of common language content in both language directions

Learning objective of compulsory module 4: Interpreting
Basic skills in oral translation; knowledge of the most important strategies for using short-term memory and consolidation of interpreting-specific aspects of speech culture

Minors (Complementary Subject Areas) are elective courses that consist of pre-determined modules comprising 30 ECTS credits that supplement subject-specific content with content from other disciplines/courses that are not part of the student's own degree programme
