• Length: approx. 90-100 pages (font size 12, line spacing 1.5) including bibliography, but excluding appendices (+/- 10 %). It is at the discretion of the supervisor to accept theses exceeding or lacking the stipulated length.

• Time period: A time period in which the master’s degree thesis is to be completed must be agreed with the first supervisor (and, if applicable, with the second supervisor).
• Topic: Students have the right to submit an elaborated topic proposal.
• Language: The master's degree thesis can be written either in German or in one of the languages offered at the department (to be agreed with the supervisors). If the thesis is not written in German, a summary of the content in German (approx. 10% of the total volume) must be included.

Date

As a rule, the defence of the master’s degree thesis can only take place one month after the thesis has been positively assessed.

Exam committee

The committee consists of three members.

There must be a member with venia docendi on the exam board. The first and second examiners must be professors or academic staff with a doctoral degree engaged in research and teaching.

Procedure for the thesis defence

The defence of the master’s degree thesis lasts one hour in total and is held in German. The first half of the defence consists of a presentation of the MA thesis (PowerPoint format possible). In the second half of the defence, the exam board will ask specific questions about the MA thesis. This is followed by the oral announcement of the assessment of the thesis defence.
