RESEARCH

The research group led by Michael Buchhold investigates the emergence of quantum matter far from thermal equilibrium. The focus lies on the classification and characterization of collective quantum phenomena and novel quantum phases in many-body systems.

Using quantum field theoretical methods, renormalization group techniques, and computer simulations, the group addresses fundamental questions in quantum dynamics. These include coherent transport, critical phenomena at nonequilibrium phase transitions, topological phases in open systems, and the formation of transient states of matter in driven quantum materials.

Current research topics include the classification of quantum matter states in quantum circuits, the stabilization of nonequilibrium matter in adaptive and nonreciprocal quantum platforms (such as Rydberg atom arrays and superconducting quantum circuits), as well as the creation of exotic states of matter such as exciton liquids or nonequilibrium superconductors in driven quantum materials.
