Research

Jessica Pflüger is Professor of Sociology (meso-level sociology) working at the intersection of the sociology of work, organisations, and science. Her research focuses on the analysis of social practices as shaped by organisational and institutional contexts. A particular emphasis lies on qualitative social research and its methodological development, especially case study methodology, as well as on the analysis of research practices and ethical issues in social research. Empirically, she examines transformations of work, organisations, social reproduction, and gender relations.

Current Work

Textbook project
Together with Hans Pongratz, she is authoring the textbook Arbeitssoziologie: Eine Einführung (Nomos, forthcoming 2026). An English-language version is in preparation.

Research project
Transnationalisation of Higher Education in China – Institutional Governance of Chinese Universities and Transnational Elite Formation (THEC) (2025–2027)

The project investigates current processes of transnationalisation in the Chinese higher education system and analyses their implications for governance structures, institutional strategies, and the mobility orientations of educational elites. It combines perspectives from organisational and science studies with biographical research on “lived transnationalisation”.

The project is led by Yvonne Berger (TH München); Jessica Pflüger (University of Innsbruck) is the cooperation partner in Austria. Funding is provided by the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts.
