Minor for Bachelor Programmes
Austrian Studies

Would you like to participate in informed discussions about current European politics and acquire a basic knowledge of cultural events? Then the elective package ‘Austrian Studies’ is just right for you – because Austria has much more to offer than you might think.

The courses broaden your view of Europe's historical context up to the present day, as the history of ‘Austria’ is much broader than today's borders suggest. It begins within the framework of the Holy Roman Empire, leads through the Habsburg Monarchy in all its diversity to the Republic of Austria and the other successor states of the monarchy, takes a look at the two world wars and deals with life on both sides of the Iron Curtain after 1945 up to the EU accessions of the past decades.

And not just in historical and political terms – you decide: Are you more interested in the ‘Cultural Spaces of Music’ or ‘Localisation in Art’, the ‘Literary and Linguistic Space of Austria’, ‘Slavic Languages, Literatures and Cultures in Eastern, Central and South-Eastern Europe’, ‘Natural and Cultural Spaces’ or the ‘Historical Legal Space of Austria’? Then, in addition to the compulsory module ‘Austrian History – a Construction’, you choose the two modules that appeal to you most.

The Minor "Austrian Studies" bundles subjects from four faculties at the Leopold-Franzens-University (the Faculty of Philosophy and History, the Faculty of Philological and Cultural Studies, the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences). They all deal with the area of the former Habsburg Monarchy and its successor states in essential areas of their research as well as in their teaching and use different temporal as well as theoretical-methodological approaches in researching this common 'space' and the questions associated with it. “Austrian” is understood as a 'cultural space' produced by different societies along the time axis from the Holy Roman Empire via the Habsburg Monarchy, the First Republic and the Second World War to the Second Republic with the subsequent bloc formation, the consequences of 1989 and the EU membership in 1995 up to the immediate present of Austria in the European and global context.

Graduates of the Minor "Austrian Studies" have advanced knowledge of the history and culture of Central and Southeast-Central Europe. They recognise the importance of political and social structures for social, legal and economic processes as well as for cultural developments (architecture, visual arts, literature, music, etc.) in this region in its historical depth and in its interconnectedness and they are able to interpret and classify current processes. They are therefore able to apply the acquired knowledge and the findings derived from it to the solution of relevant problems in their individual scientific and later professional field of activity. Through the Minor, students have a thematically as well as spatially focused complement to their respective major studies, based on key aspects of predominantly other disciplines in the field. Furthermore, they are able to develop interdisciplinary questions, to work on them accordingly and to present their results. In the joint development and discussion of the issues, they have also acquired social skills and are able to work in a team.

The Economics elective package comprises 30 ECTS-Credits. The elective package consists of three modules (1 compulsory module and 2 elective modules), which are listed below. These modules can be completed in one semester or spread over several semesters. Most modules are held in German. The complete version of the curriculum can be found here.
