Research
At the Department of Musicology at the University of Innsbruck, music is researched from various perspectives. The study of Western art music is mainly focussed on modern music, with a particular emphasis on Viennese modernism and contemporary music. In addition to the traditional historical approach, questions of music aesthetics, music sociology and music hermeneutics are investigated. Another field of Musicology research at the department is the examination of popular music, such as mainstream pop, punk, rap or popular brass music, and non-European music cultures, in particular from the South American lowlands, the Caribbean and East Asia. A central focus is cultural studies music research - with topics such as anti-Semitism, music and politics, music and cultural identities, music and gender.
More detailed information on the research activities can be found at Employee pages.

The Gustav Mahler Research Centre is closely networked with the institute.
