Munich-born Rudolf von Ficker founded the Department of Music Studies at the University of Innsbruck in 1925. A few years earlier, Ficker had already established a Collegium Musicum, which was based on the ideal of combining theoretical scholarship and the lively cultivation of music.

2025: 100 years of Music Studies Innsbruck

In 2025, we celebrated the centenary of our institute. A series of events took place throughout the year to honour the anniversary:

  • October 2025 - January 2026: The lecture series "Cultures of Sound" started just in time for the beginning of the winter semester 2025/26. It presents the diversity of relationships that are created through musical and sonic interactions between people and their environment. Perspectives from various disciplines within and outside Music Studies present cultures of sound in all their diversity - in order to promote new interdisciplinary networks and research ideas and to open up the breadth and depth of their meanings to participants.
