Journalism Festival 2025

A weekend with a view

University panel on "Media freedom - freedom of the media?", journalism festival on 16 May from 13:00-14:30
Location: Kaiser-Leopold-Saal, Theology

Media freedom is an essential component of democracy. Accordingly, there should be no state political influence on reporting. When media are prevented from reporting freely, such as the Washington Post by its owners or, as in Hungary, by the state, this democratic pillar threatens to crumble.
The EU now wants to ensure editorial independence and protect journalists from influence with the European Media Freedom Act. Reporters Without Borders welcomes the law, while Europe's publishers' associations fear overregulation. Does media freedom automatically mean freedom of the media? What is the relationship between freedom, regulation and democracy - what does this mean in practice? Experts discuss with students from the University of Innsbruck.
