Wind is the Ultimate Artist: Towards an Architecture of Dynamic Equilibrium

Abstract
This paper proposes dynamic equilibrium as an architectural design principle that challenges the conventional reliance on static stability. Drawing on the structural logic of Mobiles and proportional linkage systems, the research investigates how articulated suspension structures can maintain equilibrium through continuous recalibration while adapting to environmental forces. As a homage to Tim Prentice, the full-scale prototype Wind is the Ultimate Artist demonstrates how hierarchical balance, low-inertia components, and lightweight paper membranes enable wind-driven spatial transformation without loss of structural coherence. Through combined digital simulations, simplified numerical approximations, and iterative physical model studies, the project reveals that such dynamic systems cannot be adequately developed through conventional drawing-based methods alone, but require experimental material engagement. The pavilion reframes wind as co-designer rather than load, shifting authorship from formal imposition to calibrated boundary-setting. Positioned between tensile structures and kinetic art, the research suggests that proportional dynamic equilibrium offers new pedagogical, structural, and spatial possibilities for lightweight architecture.
