Transcription tool
To provide the best possible support for research work at our faculty, we are making a tool available for transcribing audio files as part of our research data management services.
Transcription is carried out using the University of Innsbruck’s HPC systems. The workflow was developed in collaboration with the Central IT Service, the Scientific Computing research group and the Data Protection Coordination Office at the University, and implemented by EuroCC Austria. Data sovereignty remains with the University, thereby ensuring that interview transcription complies with data protection regulations.
Important notes:
- Interview participants must be properly informed and give their consent.
- The automated script can only transcribe one audio file at a time. If you have several files to be transcribed, please send one file first. Wait until you have received the transcript of this file, and then send the next file.
- Processing times depend on the workload of the HPC systems, which is why we cannot guarantee that a transcript will be ready by a specific time. We therefore ask you to plan ahead when submitting your files!
- The transcribed files are always returned to the person who submitted the audio files.
- If your files are not in MP3 format, please contact us in advance (openscience-sopo@uibk.ac.at).
- Please read the instructions and information below regarding the submission of your file(s) carefully.
Tip
To send the audio file, it is best to open these three windows in your browser at the same time: ACOnetFilesender, Element Chat, and your email programme.
The audio file (mp3) is sent in encrypted form via ACOnetFilesender: after selecting the relevant institution and logging in, you can upload your file and select the ‘File encryption’ option.

You can then select the ‘Generate password’ option. Copy the generated password and send it to Julia Schwab via the Element chat. You can now submit the file (after accepting the terms of use).
A window will appear from which you can copy the download link. You should then email this download link to Julia Schwab (openscience-sopo@uibk.ac.at) for further processing.

Once the password has been sent via chat and the download link via email, the audio file is sent to the HPC systems (LEO 5) for transcription using an automated script via an encrypted hard drive.
The following information is required for the transcription of your audio file:
- Language
- Number of speakers
- Do you require a translation in addition to the transcription?
- If so, into which language?
Please email this information, along with the download link, to Julia Schwab (openscience-sopo@uibk.ac.at).
If you have any further questions please feel free to contact Julia Schwab julia.schwab@uibk.ac.at or openscience-sopo@uibk.ac.at
