Museum

Today's Department of Experimental Physics was officially founded in 1770,

At that time, the name of the independent teaching centre was 'Physikalisches Cabinett'.

This year, 2025, would therefore be our 255th anniversary

In two showcases in the foyer of the Victor-Franz-Hess-Haus and in the experimental anteroom of HS A you will find a small collection of historical physics equipment from the early days of 'Experimental Physics' at the University of Innsbruck - first acquisition of equipment in 1752 - up to the year 1990. The exhibits provide an overview of more than 200 years of physics, which essentially reflect the history of the development of experimental physics here, from the 'Armarium' to the 'Physikalisches Cabinett' and the 'Physikalisches Institut' to today's Department of Experimental Physics.

The picture on the left shows a Zamboni pendulum (electric 'perpetuum mobile'), which was in operation from 1817 to 1970.
