Jessica Pflüger is a professor of sociology (mesosociology). She researches how social order is created - in work, in organisations, in gender relations and in science itself. She combines theoretical perspectives of sociology with empirical analyses of institutions and processes of social change.

She completed her doctorate in 2012 with an international comparative dissertation on the changing research practices of social scientists and subsequently analysed the transformation of university governance and its consequences for employees (e.g. 2021 with K. Mojescik). Parts of her international research deal with social changes in China, including labour protests in comparison to Germany (2017 with I. Artus) and the transnationalisation of Chinese universities (ongoing with Y. Berger).

She is currently working on a further development of the sociological perspective on households at the interface of market, state and family. Together with Hans Pongratz, she is co-authoring the textbook Labour Sociology: An Introduction (Nomos, forthcoming 2026).

She has a long-standing interest in the methods and epistemological foundations of social science research. In this context, she has published extensively on case study methodology (e.g. 2017 with H. J. Pongratz and R. Trinczek; 2018 with S. Wagenknecht), on triangulation (2013) and on questions of scientific ethics and reflexivity (2024 with C. Scheytt).

Current research projects:

Transnationalisation of Higher Education in China - Institutional Governance of Chinese Universities and Transnational Elite Formation (THEC) (2025-2027)

From 2025 to 2027, the Department of Sociology at the University of Innsbruck is conducting research on current transnationalisation developments and efforts in the Chinese higher education sector and questions of "lived transnationalisation" in the context of biographical elite research.
The aim is to gain reliable empirical findings on (1) which inter- and transnationalisation developments and efforts are currently shaping the Chinese higher education system, (2) how selected elite universities are implementing these, (3) what this means for the mobility orientations of Chinese educational elites in an international context and (4) what consequences can be expected for the German-speaking higher education sector and labour market. The project is headed by Prof. Dr Yvonne Berger (TH Munich); the cooperation partner in Austria is Prof. Dr Jessica Pflüger (UIBK). Funding is provided by the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts.
