Marco Freek was the initiator behind the founding of the Breath Research Institute at the Austrian Academy of Sciences and founder of the International Association of Breath Research (IABR), which he established as Executive Director in 2005 at Schoenbrunn Palace, a position he continues to hold to this day. As director of a research association, he also contributed to the establishment and initial funding of the Journal of Breath Research (IOP Publishing). He hosted several IABR summits, including the pre-founding meeting in Dornbirn in 2004, followed by conferences in Innsbruck (2005), Vienna (2015), and Zurich (2016).
Since 2012, Marco Freek has been serving as an officer for strategic affairs in the President’s Office at the Medical University Innsbruck (MUI). Furthermore, he holds the position of president or vice president in several private foundations dedicated to the promotion of scientific research. His academic focus areas include quality assurance in medical universities and their affiliated clinics, public health with particular attention to the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the philanthropic support of science and medicine, Habsburg governance, and the economization of politics.
Marco Freek studied at the universities of Innsbruck, Vienna, and Notre Dame (Indiana, USA), and holds advanced academic degrees from four different disciplines. Among his academic honors are a personal grant conferred by the regional government of Vorarlberg, the Hypo Tirol Bank Research Award, and a scholarship to attend colloquia at the Academy Traunkirchen personally led by Nobel Laureate Anton Zeilinger.
