European Joint Master DIGISOC: International Perspectives on the Digital Society

Digital transformation, social change, and global responsibility are at the heart of the European Joint Master Programme “Digital Society, Social Innovation and Global Citizenship (DIGISOC)”. This interdisciplinary, international, and innovative master’s programme is jointly offered by the University of Innsbruck, the University of Naples Federico II (Italy), and the Palacký University Olomouc (Czech Republic).

The Master Programme is designed for students from a wide range of bachelor’s backgrounds – from A for Architecture to Z for Zoology – who are interested in digital transformation, social change, and global responsibility and who wish to critically analyse and actively shape digital societies in leadership positions.

DIGISOC combines social science analysis with digital competencies and a strong sense of societal responsibility. Our aim is to enable students not only to understand digital transformation, but also to shape it responsibly,” emphasises Johannes Seiler, Academic Coordinator of DIGISOC at the University of Innsbruck.

A truly European Joint Study Programme

As a joint study programme delivered by three universities, students are enrolled at all participating institutions from the very beginning. This provides them with access to the academic resources, teaching offers, and international networks of all partner universities.

“The particular strength of DIGISOC lies in the close cooperation between the partner universities. Students experience Europe not merely as a place to study, but as a shared educational space,” explains Assoz. Prof. Dr. Nikolaus Umlauf, Dean of Studies responsible for the joint programme at the University of Innsbruck.

Hybrid teaching and international mobility

The programme is consistently designed to be hybrid, international, and interdisciplinary. Courses are delivered in innovative blended and online formats and are jointly taught by interdisciplinary, international teams of lecturers. Fixed components of the curriculum include Erasmus+-funded mobility phases, in particular international Summer Schools, which—implemented as Blended Intensive Programmes (BIPs)—combine online teaching with intensive on-site phases at the partner universities.

“DIGISOC exemplifies how innovative teaching can be implemented across disciplinary and national boundaries. International mobility and digital teaching and learning formats are key themes in this context,” says Univ.-Prof. Dr. Janette Walde, Vice-Rector for Teaching and Students at the University of Innsbruck.

Scholarships and individual learning pathways

Scholarships are available to support students, in particular by helping to offset annual tuition fees. In addition, the curriculum offers compulsory and optional mobility phases, flexible elective options, individual learning pathways, and practice-oriented components such as funded international internships or international service-learning projects.
