Tailored training for the future of software development

The "Performance-Oriented Software Engineering" bootcamp demonstrated the importance of practice-oriented and interdisciplinary training for professional development in the field of computer science. With the goal of further educating highly motivated employees who already possess solid knowledge in computer science, the bootcamp offered customized training on topics such as performance, code quality, and sustainability, tailored to the participants' individual needs.

Individual Support and Customized Training

At the beginning of the bootcamp, the participants' prior knowledge of performance-oriented software development was assessed. This assessment enabled individual support and customized training that covered precisely the topics relevant to the specific company applications and participants. This enabled the targeted teaching of skills that provide direct added value for the individuals and their companies.

Interdisciplinarity as the Key to Success

The bootcamp promoted an interdisciplinary approach to the tasks through joint training with various companies. Regular presentations by participants, in which they presented their progress and developments in their respective company projects, as well as subsequent plenary discussions, facilitated valuable exchange. This led to participants gathering insights and ideas beyond their own use cases, enriching both the project and their personal experience.

A Big Picture and a Detailed View

In addition to technical expertise, the participants' perspective on the big picture and the details was sharpened. Through plenary discussions and the formation of smaller working groups, the participants were able to not only identify similarities and differences in the problems but also develop solutions together. This was further enhanced by insights into current research and state-of-the-art technologies in the field of performance-oriented programming.

Valuable Practical Experience and Real-Life Use Cases

A particularly valuable component of the bootcamp was the exchange of practical experiences. Each company contributed its own project, allowing participants to learn from real-life challenges and solutions in different industries. The results spoke for themselves: At Plansee SE, for example, impressive speedups of up to 6000x–7000x were achieved by porting CPU-only implementations to GPUs and further optimizing them.

Communication and Long-Term Networking

The bootcamp focused not only on specialist knowledge, but also on promoting communication and networking. Shared lunches, a closing event, and the organization of regular meetings ensured a sustainable exchange among participants.

Outlook

The bootcamp not only advanced the participants' professional skills but also helped them actively transfer and share the knowledge they acquired within their companies. The bootcamp has once again demonstrated its role as an important continuing education measure that not only imparts specialist knowledge but also promotes networking and collaboration between different industries and companies.
