Pritam Sukul

Pritam is the Leader for Experimental Medicine & Translational Research at the Dept. of Anesthesiology, Intensive Care Medicine & Pain Therapy of the Rostock University Medical Centre (Germany), where he obtained his Doctor of Medical Sciences (DSc.) on Experimental Anesthesiology in 2017.
He is a recipient of the 2013 Marie-Curie ESR fellowship, amongst the highly competitive and prestigious awards in Europe supporting the most promising young minds. His earlier foundations in the United Kingdom and INDIA are based on experimental & translational human medicine, clinical research, pharmaceutical management, pre-clinical studies (zoology), plant science (botany) and chemistry.
His expertise includes fundamental and translational research, multi-omics, in vitro volatile metabolomics and, clinical breath analysis for non-invasive monitoring of physiology, metabolism, pathophysiology, therapeutic outcomes and aging in real-time.
Along with his series of scientific contributions towards the state-of-the-art standardization of real-time breath sampling and analysis, in 2023, Dr. Sukul has discovered the principal metabolic origin of human exhaled isoprene that was shrouded in mystery and believed erroneously since last four decades. This ground-breaking discovery allowed him to obtain a permanent employment at the University of Rostock (Germany) and to successfully submit a Habilitation thesis to obtain an Associate Professorship. In line with the above, his present research is aimed at the discovery of endogenous origin(s) of other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in human breath – i.e., an indispensable prerequisite for valid clinical interpretations of VOCs as biomarker.
Pritam has developed his perspective as an independent and internationally networked young scientist in various multidisciplinary and transnational projects and consortiums. He belongs amongst the 14 global experts who act as scientific and strategic advisory board for the Research Square (USA). Since 2019, he also acts as a consultative non-resident scientific advisor (honorary) for the Govt. of INDIA. He also acts as a special issue editor and peer-reviewer for the Journal of Breath Research and other renowned scientific journals.
Besides linking bench to bedside, he is dedicated in fostering open science and open communications to society.
