Karl Unterkofler

Karl Unterkofler was a Professor of Mathematics at the Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences in Dornbirn until he retired from there. He currently works at the Institute for Breath Research at the University of Innsbruck. He is an internationally recognized authority in the field of mathematical and computational modelling of breath gas kinetics and has over 20 years of experience in this field. Together with his former student Julian King, he developed mathematical models that describe the concentration profiles of VOCs in breath in real time when exercise alters alveolar ventilation and cardiac output, e.g. “A mathematical model for breath gas analysis of volatile organic compounds with special emphasis on acetone” (link: https://doi.org/10.1007/s00285-010-0398-9) or “Physiological modeling of isoprene dynamics in exhaled breath” (link: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jtbi.2010.09.028). He was the chairman of the local organizing committee of the first Breathing Gas Conference in Dornbirn 2004 link:(https://itp.tugraz.at/~karl/BreathConferenceDornbirn2004.pdf), organized by Anton Amann. He is also a founding member of the International Association of Breath Research (IABR) (link: http://www.iabr.at/about-iabr/history/).
