Jonathan Beauchamp

Dr Jonathan Beauchamp is a research associate at the Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging IVV in Freising, Germany, where he has worked since 2008. He currently heads the Department of Sensory Analytics and Technologies, where his team of scientists and engineers develops methods to characterise volatile compounds in various contexts, from food aroma release, to product emissions and the human volatilome, and explore their associations with sensory perception, health and wellbeing.
Jonathan holds a degree in physics (MSci, University College London, UK) and a doctorate in Environmental Physics (University of Innsbruck, Austria). His specialist field is applications of proton transfer reaction-mass spectrometry (PTR-MS) in breath analysis and beyond, for which he boasts more than two decades of experience and is a recognised expert. Since stepping foot into the field in 2004, he has undertaken a wealth of research on breath, primarily on method development and optimisation, and has played an active role in the community, with roles as past IABR treasurer (2015-2024), current co-chair of the IABR focus group on standardisation, as well as Associate Editor of Journal of Breath Research (2015 to present). Jonathan has published over 100 articles and given over 80 talks on his research in breath and other topics. He has edited/co-edited several books, notably Breathborne Biomakers and the Human Volatilome (2020, Elsevier; co-edited with Cristina Davis and Joachim Pleil), which represents a major reference work in the field. Jonathan is also a member of the American Chemical Society (ACS) and former chair of its Agricultural and Food Chemistry (AGFD) division (2023).
