Residence and employment of international researchers

For researchers from the EU, EEA (Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway) and Switzerland, there is freedom of establishment, i.e. no separate work permit is required.

Researchers from third countries (all others) must apply for a visa or a residence permit to enter Austria. For employment in Austria for up to six months a Visa D (Erwerb - gainful employment) can be applied for. For longer stays (6 months or more) the settlement title researcher must be applied for.

The hosting agreement applying for the researcher's residence permit is signed by the Vice-Rector for Research. The following information must be submitted to the project.service.büro before the person concerned starts work:

  • gender
  • name, first name
  • academic title
  • date and place of birth
  • citizenship
  • home address
  • (planned) residential address in Austria (optional)
  • funding (externally funded project, global budget)
  • gross salary (job grading)
  • no. of working hours
  • duration of residence permit (from, to max 24 months)
  • employment duration (from, to can vary from duration of residence)
  • research topic, project title
  • name of institute
  • name of the head of institute/project leader
  • (planned) stay in another EU member state (optional)

EU, EEA and Switzerland

If you are a citizen of an EU/EEA country or Switzerland, you enjoy visa and settlement freedom ("Niederlassungsfreiheit). If the financing of your stay is guaranteed and you have sufficient health insurance, you only need a valid travel document (passport or identity card) for entry and stay in Austria.

Third countries

Stay up to 6 months

Visa C

This is the conventional tourist visa. It can be issued for durations of stay up to 90 days (in total) within a period of 180 days and entitles the visa holder to enter into and stay in the territory of the Schengen states. If an employement is envisaged the Visum C has to be issued as "Visum C - Erwerb".

Visa D

Stay over 6 months

Residence permit student

  • Summary: Residence permits for students are intended for third country nationals (people who are neither EU citizens / EU citizen or any other EEA citizens / other EEA nationals nor Sqitzerland) and can be issued for a temporary stay without establishment intent. They shall be issued for (enrolled) students and members of other groups.
  • Max employment rate: 10-20h
  • Duration: max 12 months
  • Stay in Schengen area: max. 3 months

Recidence permit researcher

  • Summary: Residence permits for researcher are intended for third country nationals (people who are neither EU citizens / EU citizen or any other EEA citizens / other EEA nationals nor Switherland) and can be issued for a temporary stay without establishment intent. They are granted for scientists / researchers and other groups.
  • Max employment rate: 40h
  • Duration: max 24 months
  • Stay in Schengen area: max. 3 months
