Research Area Scientific Computing

The Research Area Scientific Computing integrates all scientific activity at the University of Innsbruck in information technology (IT) and computer-aided research. High-end computing facilities allow the simulation and optimization of complex processes, as well as the organization, analysis and presentation of big data to solve increasingly complex compute- and data-intensive problems in many different fields such as science, engineering and life-science. The Research Area SC encompasses three research centers and individual members:

Aims of the Research Area SC are to use the inherent synergies between various research areas and different fields by cooperating within the university, as well as between different universities and other institutions in Austria and all over the world. Thus fruitful interdisciplinary research is fostered by exchanging knowledge and information, by sharing ressources, by coordinating funding for keeping and developing the necessary infrastructure, as well as by enhancing science oriented teaching.

Background

The main strategies of the University of Innsbruck that form the basis for performance agreements between the University and the Ministry of Science and Research, as well as between the faculties and the rectorate are laid down in development plans. The main goals of the development plan 2005-2009 were enhancing research and research guided teaching, opening the university, as well as optimising organisational structures and controlling in order to become a research university. To achieve these goals the focus was laid on research guided teaching, promoting junior scientists, enhancing first-class PhD-programmes and high quality professorships.

Furthermore, after a phase of increasing specialisation in various subjects, the University of Innsbruck returned to an interdisciplinary approach. Interdisciplinary exploration and comprehension is supported by cross-disciplinary research areas, research platforms and research centres. Benefits arise from synergy effects as well as from finding a common language and developing novel, team-oriented modes of operation. Research areas and platforms consist of several highly qualified research centres and groups encompassing individuals from various fields contributing to  impressive scientific achievements of the University of Innsbruck on an international level.
