Program music research

The online databases Musik nach Bildern ("Music Based on Visual Arts") and Klingende Texte ("Music Based on Literary Texts") strive to include all published and unpublished compositions that are based on visual works of art and literary texts. The databases are updated frequently and provide convenient cross-referencing of composers and their compositions

a) with visual artists and their artworks
b) with writers and their texts.

Giacinto Scelsi and Austria

The research centres the life and work of the Italian composer Giacinto Scelsi. The project will be devided into two parts: a theoretical one as well as a practical study. "The Gesture of the monodic" is the main topic of the analytical work. The meaning of mysticism for Scelsi himself and a second theme "the projection of mysticism upon Scelsi" is the topic of a music-sociological study. The meaning as well as the influence of Scelsi’s music on the works of contemporary composers in Austria is in the Centre of the practical part. Especially Graz, as the place, where Scelsi's work was heard first in Austria, should be analysed and presented. With numerous interviews (composers as well as interprets and artistic festival leaders) their expieriences and the special influence of Scelsi’s work and thinking on these personalities should be analysed.
The results of the research will be presented in a symposium "Giacinto Scelsi and Austria" at the University of Music and Dramatic Arts Graz. Also a written work would be an important product/result of the whole project.

Tyrolean recordings

Within the framework of a project financed by the Department of Cultural Affairs of the Austrian Province of Tyrol the catalog Tirolensien auf Compact Discs, compiled by Mag. Gerti Wurzrainer in 1998, was transferred to an internet database. This publicly accessible online-catalog, using a clearly arranged, easily searchable format, is a rich, exhaustive source of essential data pertaining to these sound recordings.

Tyrolean music legacies

This project, sponsored financially by the Department of Cultural Affairs of the Austrian Province of Tyrol and the Office of Cultural Affairs of the City of Innsbruck, was launched in the summer of 2005. It is based on the cooperative efforts of the Music Department of the University of Innsbruck with the Brenner Archives Research Institute. Within the framework of this project the musical bequests and living wills of persons intimately connected with the music scene in the Tyrolean region during the 20th and 21st centuries are being cataloged and entered into the Brenner Archives.
