OpenCourseWare and the Future of Global Education

Abstract:

In 2001 then-president of MIT, Dr. Charles Vest, announced that MIT will launch OpenCourseWare (ocw.mit.edu).  The idea is simple.  Through OCW, MIT will publish on the web the teaching materials from virtually all undergraduate and graduate courses it teaches.  OCW is free and open to anyone with a browser.  Today, we have over 1,800 courses, which accounts for 90% of the courses.  Just as important, 90% of the MIT faculty have voluntarily contributed their teaching materials to OCW. Each month, the MIT OCW site receives 2 million visits from every continent. This translates into over 1.5 million actual users.  Recently, other universities around the world have begun their own OCW, marking a trend that, according to a UNESCO official, is unstoppable.  There are over 180 universities already, from every continent (ocwconsortium.org). One prominent effort in this regard is Japan OCW Consortium, consisting of some of the top universities in Japan (www.jocw.jp).  A similar effort is underway in China with the China Open Resource for Education (CORE) and in countries in Europe and South America.  Ultimately, we hope to link all the OCW sites into a global premier educational content network available freely and openly to anyone who wants to use it.

Zur Person

 Prof. Shigeru Miyagawa was a member of the founding MIT team that proposed OCW in 2000.  He is Professor of Linguistics at MIT and holds the Chair, Kochi-Manjiro Professor of Japanese Language and Culture. His linguistics publications include several books/monographs and nearly fifty articles. Along with linguistics, he runs a laboratory that creates interactive educational programs. StarFestival, which looks at issues of growing up in multilingual, multicultural societies, was awarded the Best of Show at the 1997 MacWorld Exposition, Distinguished Award at the Multimedia Grandprix 2000, and the Irwin Sizer Award for the Most Significant Improvement to MIT Education. JP NET (http://web.mit.edu/fll/www/projects/JPNet.shtml), which has the entire MIT Japanese program on the web, was one of the first online projects in the world to place an entire academic program on the Internet (1993–1994). Visualizing Cultures (visualizingcultures.mit.edu), in collaboration with the Pulitzer Prize-winning historian John W. Dower, has been recognized by the National Endowment for the Humanities as an outstanding humanities educational Web site. It won the 2004 MIT Class of 1960 Innovation in Education Award. For his work in interactive media, the educational technology magazine Converge chose him as one of twenty national "Shapers of the Future."

Worin besteht der Mehrwert von Lehrmaterial-Sammlungen im Internet?

Abstract:

Ambitioniert gestartet, blieben Lehrmaterial-Sammlungen in den letzten Jahren teilweise deutlich hinter den Erwartungen zurück. Projekte wie EducaNext oder etwa der österreichische Bildungspool konnten ihre Ziele hinsichtlich verfügbar gemachter Lehrmaterialien und Nutzung oft nicht erreichen. Open Content und Web 2.0 schaffen allerdings neue Rahmenbedingungen für die Organisation von offenen Lernräumen. Mit teilweise radikal neuen Konzepten wie z.B. „Contact statt Content“ oder „vom Bildungspool zum Lernpool“ versuchen sich die Portale neu zu positionieren. Basierend auf einer Anwenderbefragung und einer Designstudie präsentieren die Vortragenden einen Blick in die Zukunft der gemeinschaftlichen Erstellung und Nutzung von Materialien in der Lehre.

 Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Daniela Nösterer  ist Beraterin bei der Knowledge Markets Consulting Ges.m.b.H. Ihre Aufgaben umfassen die Pflege und Aktualisierung von E-Learning-Inhalten sowie die Unterstützung beim Design von Webauftritten von Bildungsdienstleistern. Zuletzt war sie maßgeblich beim Relaunch des Portals der WU Executive Academy tätig. Daniela Nösterer studiert Engineering für Computer-basiertes Lernen an der Fachhochschule Hagenberg und befasst sich derzeit mit Themen wie Requirements Engingeering und Software Usability.

Zur Person:

Dr. Bernd Simon ist wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Institut für Wirtschaftsinformatik & Neue Medien. Im Mai 2005 gründetet er gemeinsam mit Prof. Dr. Gustaf Neumann die Knowledge Markets Consulting Ges.m.b.H, eine Beratungseinrichtung für Lern- und Wissenstechnologien. Das Unternehmen setzt auf den Open Source Framework OpenACS/DotLrn und bedient damit Kunden wie die Daimler AG (Stuttgart), die Medizinische Universität Wien oder den Bildungsserver Burgenland. Zurzeit ist Bernd Simon als Berater des Österreichischen Bundesministeriums für Unterricht, Kunst und Kultur beim Aufbau eines österreichweiten Content-Netzwerks tätig. In seiner Funktion als Management Team Leader der EducaNext Association initiierte er das mit 7 Millionen Euro dotierte eContent+ Projekt "ICOPER - Interoperable Content for Performance in a Competency-driven Society".

Konzept und Aufbau eines nationalen Learning Object Repository in der Schweiz

Abstract:

Aufgrund einer Initiative von Vertretern schweizer Hochschulen wurde im Sommer 2007 ein Learning Object Repository (LOR) Pilotprojekt gestartet.
Es hat zum Ziel, eine nationale Bibliothek mit wiederverwendbaren, digitalen Lernobjekten aufzubauen. Es wurde eine flexible, serviceorientierte Architektur gewählt, die den Aufbau einer nationalen Föderation von Repositories erlaubt. Wir präsentieren das Konzept und den Status des LOR sowie die erwarteten langfristigen kulturellen Implikationen der Initiative.

Zur Person:

Rolf Brugger studierte Informatik und Psychologie an der Universität Fribourg und an der ETH Zürich. In der Forschungsgruppe für Dokumenterkennung in Fribourg promovierte er über das Thema von selbst-lernenden Systemen zur Erkennung von Dokumentstrukturen. Anschliessend arbeitete er im Swiss Virtual Campus Projekt in der edutech Arbeitsgruppe als Berater für e-Learning Projekte. Er ist jetzt in der Stiftung SWITCH tätig als e-Learning Projektleiter.
