A language portrait study of the motivation to learn “desired” languages
In this study, South African students reflect on their multilingual repertoires when they create language portraits. “Desired” languages (the languages that participants (n=1961) aspire to know and use) will be focused on because participants’ perceptions about these languages will reveal insights into motivations to learn additional languages.
Professor Susan Coetzee-Van Rooy is a research Professor in the Faculty of Humanities at the North-West University (NWU) in South Africa.
She studies the multilingual repertoires of people and the specific roles that home languages and Englishes play in these repertoires. She regards herself as a DMM and WEs scholar. Meaning, she situates her empirical work within the Dynamic Model of Multilingualism (DMM) devised by Herdina and Jessner (2002) and she studies Englishes within the multilingual repertoires of her participants.
