Generative AI is often framed as a powerful augmentation technology—enhancing cognitive performance, accelerating decision-making, and freeing humans for more meaningful work. Yet this narrative obscures a less visible trade-off. Drawing on emerging research on cognitive offloading, this talk critically examines how reliance on AI systems may erode core human capabilities, including critical thinking, judgment, and reflective reasoning. In academic and organizational contexts alike, the increasing delegation of cognitive tasks to machines risks diminishing individual autonomy and self-efficacy, while subtly reshaping what it means to be competent. Beyond the individual level, the talk explores how the pervasive use of AI may undermine collective decision-making processes, devalue human expertise, and contribute to growing isolation within institutions—dynamics that challenge the very foundations of universities and knowledge work. Rather than rejecting AI, the talk argues for a deliberate, human-centered approach that preserves and cultivates the cognitive and social capacities on which resilient institutions depend.
