Alan Draper is currently an Emeritus Professor of Political Science at St. Lawrence University. He formerly was the Ranger Chair in Political Science at St. Lawrence University, Distinguished Fulbright Chair in Political Science at the University of Innsbruck, Fulbright Reseach Scholar at the University of Coimbra, and has published in the area of American and Comparative Politics.

A coalition of blacks and unions formed the basis of postwar American liberalism that articulated the principles of economic and racial equality. But in the 1960s, this coalition began to fray over issues of employment discrimination. The divergence between the two souls of liberalism—economic justice represented by the labor movement and racial justice represented by the civil rights movement—helps explain the resurgence of conservatism in the U.S. that followed.
