Work package no 6: Gas exchange (CO2, H2O, and related trace gases) of single plants, and ecosystems

Gas exchange of single leaves and branches will be measured by means of climatized portable gas exchange cuvettes
The crown conductance, a prerequisite to calculate fluxes of trace gases from the atmosphere into selected trees, is determined by means of the xylem sap flux measurements (see work package no4) in combination with micrometeorological data.
Gas exchange of grassland and dwarf shrub ecosystems will be monitored by means of energy-balance-Bowen-ratio-method. In forest stands sonic anemometers and water vapour and temperature sensors will be mounted on a mobile tower to measure the CO2 and H2O fluxes by means of the eddy correlation method
The 13C/12C isotope ratio will be determined as a long term average estimate of the water use efficiency and thus a long term indicator of plant metabolism.
Soil respiration will be measured in situ by IRGA techniques in combination with air-flushed opaque cuvettes installed at the soil surface.
