Research Interest

My research focusses on the functional adaptation of animals to a changing environment. Of special interest is the influence of changing oxygen availability, variable temperature and salinity or excessive hydrostatic pressure on cardiovascular performance, metabolism and ion regulation in fish and amphibians. Using the zebrafish as a model organism we analyze the role of the different isoforms of the hypoxia inducible transcription factors under hypoxic conditions and during development. With respect to hydrostatic pressure and buoyancy control the eel swimbladder serves as a model to analyze the changes in swimbladder structure and function during silvering and how the swimbladder can contribute to vertical migrations and to a successful spawning migration of the eel. Studies are performed at the molecular, cellular and organismic level in order to understand responses of organisms to environmental changes.
