Current research

acoel

My research focuses on the morphology and phylogeny of acoel flatworms. As these worms are very small in size the use of microscopic techniques like histology, laser-scanning-microscopy, and electron microscopy is indispensable for this research. Recently I started to incorporate molecular techniques to shed light on the phylogeny of these animals. It is still surprising how often insights into general biological phenomena can be gained by doing such specialized research. Currently acoels are recognized as the most basal bilaterians and consequently knowledge on the morphology, development and phologeny of these worms is very valuable.
