Hardware of LEO II

This web site provides some hardware details of the main cluster components.

Cluster

The whole cluster consists of three racks:

  • Two iDataplex racks with water-cooled heat exchanging doors

  • One 19'' infrastructure rack for network and storage devices

Computing nodes

  • 126 compute nodes each of which consists of:
    • 2 Intel Quad-Core L5420 CPUs (8 cores running on 2.5 GHz)
    • 32 GB DDR2 RAM (4 GB per core)
    • Single-Port 4x DDR Infiniband PCIe x8 HCA
    • 2 x 1Gb Ethernet adapter
    • 250 GB SATA2 hard disk

  • One master server for login and job submission

    • 16 GB DDR2 RAM
    • Raid controller (configured with RAID 1)
    • 2 146GB 15k 3.5'' Hot-Swap SAS hard disks
    • Single-Port 4x DDR Infiniband PCIe x8 HCA

Storage system

The storage system offers a total of 43 TB (brutto) and consists of:

  • two disk systems:
    • 2 FC-SAS, dual storage controllers (2 controller enclosures)
    • 6 SAS JBODs and Environment Service Modules (6 SAS enclosures)
    • 96 450GB 15k 3.5'' SAS disks

    • 32 GB DDR2 RAM
    • Raid controller (configured with RAID 10)
    • 4 146GB 15k 3.5'' Hot-Swap SAS hard disks
    • Single-Port 4x DDR Infiniband PCIe x8 HCA
    • 6 x 1Gb Ethernet adapter

Water Cooling System

Due to the high discharge of thermal energy the iDataplex Racks are installed with water-cooled heat exchanging doors. The water flow temperature is kept at 16 degrees celsius by the heat exchanging device (Cooltrans).
