Klaus Eisterer, tenured associate professor; born 1956 in Bregenz, with the Institute since 1984; studied History and German at the University of Innsbruck, M.A. 1983; high-school teacher 1983-85; Ph.D. 1991; habilitation 2001; from the academic year 1996/97 to 2000/01 spokesperson for the Teaching and Research Staff (except full professors) of the Faculty of the Arts and Humanities. 2006 to 2008 member of the Senate of the University. Since October 2008 Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and History.
Extended research trips to France, Spain, Brazil and the U.S.; major fields of research and teaching: history of international diplomacy, Austria in the 20th century, history of Spain and Latin America, regional history.

Rolf Steininger, full professor, chairman of the Institute from 1984 to 2010, born 1942 in Plettenberg/Westphalia; studied English and History in Marburg, Göttingen, Munich, Lancaster and Cardiff; Ph.D. 1971, Hannover; habilitation 1976 in modern and contemporary history inclusive of Anglo-American history, Hannover; 1980 professor at the University of Hannover, since 1983 in Innsbruck; German and Austrian citizenship; member of the Advisory Board and Senior Fellow of the Eisenhower Center for American Studies at the University of New Orleans; Jean-Monnet-Professor; board member of the European Community Studies Association; guest professor at the Universities of Tel Aviv, Queensland (Australia), New Orleans; editor of various book-series, including the "Innsbrucker Forschungen zur Zeitgeschichte"; numerous monographs and articles in scholarly journals; international award-winning television-, film-and radio documentaries, numerous reviews in leading journals and newspapers. Major field of research and teaching: history of the 20th century.
Prof. Steininger is a faculty member of the Academic Year Abroad (AYA), organized under the Friendship Treaty between the University of Innsbruck and the University of New Orleans, for which he regularly conducts courses in the English language, focusing on Austria and Germany in the 20th century and including fieldtrips to relevant historical locations (e.g. the "Eagle’s Nest" in Obersalzberg, the former concentration camp at Dachau), and three days in South Tyrol; up to ten German-speaking Innsbruck students with good proficiency in English are invited to take part in each of these courses with full credit at Innsbruck (for further information on AYA contact camc@uno.edu).

Hans Heiss, university lecturer, since 1994 archivist at the Südtiroler Landesarchiv Bozen/Bolzano (since 1996 vice director); born 1952 in Brixen/Bressanone, Italy; studied History and German at the University of Innsbruck; Ph.D. 1986; Habilitation 2001; instructor at the Universities of Milano, Trento, Bari and Innsbruck. Co-founder and -editor of the journal Geschichte und Region/Storia e regione since 1992, Co-founder of the tourism-museum Hochpustertal in Niederdorf/Villabassa 1994, on board of the Österreichische Zeitschrift für Geschichtswissenschaften (since 1990), chair of the advisory board of Touriseum Trauttmansdorff (opened March 2003), since November 2003 delegate of the Provincial Assembly of South Tyrol (Green-Alternative Fraction). Erwin A. Schmidl, university lecturer, born 1956 in Vienna. Studied history, anthropology, and history of art at the University of Vienna, 1981 Dr. phil.; 1983 post-graduate course on European integration at the Administrative Academy in Vienna; 2001 Univ.-Doz. (Dr. habil.) at University of Innsbruck. Presently Director of Contemporary History at the Austrian National Defence Academy in Vienna / Institute of Strategy & Security Policy (from 2001). Previous experience: Director of Research, Institute of Military Studies of the Ministry of Defence (1996-2001), Senior Fellow at the U.S. Institute of Peace in Washington D.C. (1995-96); researcher at the Austrian Army Museum (1981-95); served as UN observer in South Africa (1994); seconded to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs / UN Department (1991-92). Major fields of research: military, political, colonial and cultural history; especially on the development of international peace support operations. Wolfgang Weber, university lecturer, was born in the small West Austrian town of Dornbirn in 1964. He holds a PhD in History, MAs in History, Psychology, Philosophy, Pedagogy (joint degree), Archives and Records Management (International) and Civic Studies as well as Diplomas in Politics and New Methods in History. During his study years at the Universities of Innsbruck, Salzburg, Klagenfurt, Vienna, Essex, London and the Free University Berlin he had several free lance jobs such as bricklayer, postman, research assistant or social worker for socially disadvantaged children. In 1994 he took up a job as Senior Archivist and Contemporary Historian at the Vorarlberger Landesarchiv, Austria. In addition, he is visiting lecturer at the Universities of Durham (UK) and Innsbruck. In 2005 he was awarded the title of a Universitätsdozent for Contemporary History at the Leopold-Franzens-Universität Innsbruck. He is a member of the international editorial boards of the European Sports History Review (Frank Cass) and Auto/Biography. An Interdisciplinary and International Journal (Arnold) and academic referee to various historical journals. In 1996 he was awarded the Ludwig-Jedlicka-Förderungspreis for outstanding works in Austrian History, in 2001 the Sprachpreis der Dr.-Emmi-Herzberger-Stiftung for his non-German publications.

Gerald Steinacher, born 1970 in St. Johann in Tirol, Archivist and Historian at the Bolzano State Archives in Italy and teaches contemporary history at the University of Innsbruck. He is the author of numerous scholarly articles and has edited a number of books, including Faschismen im Gedächtnis (Innsbruck Studien Verlag, 2005); Südtirol im Dritten Reich. NS-Herrschaft im Norden Italiens, 1943-1945 (Innsbruck Studien Verlag, 2003); Tra Duce, Führer e Negus. L'Alto Adige e la Guerra d'Abissinia (Trento Temi 2008); Für Freiheit und Recht in Europa. Das Stauffenberg-Attentat vom 20 Juli 1944 und der Widerstand in Deutschland, Österreich und Italien (Innsbruck Studien Verlag, 2008), and Faschismus und Architektur (Innsbruck Studien Verlag, 2008.) In 2006, he was a Fellow at the Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies and a Fellow at the United States Holocaust Museum, both in Washington, DC.) In 2008, he published his Habilitation, Nazis on the Run, on the escape of war criminals through Italy to overseas.
Gerald Steinacher presently serves as an expert consultant for the Italian Military Justice in the prosecution of war criminals and for the German Foreign Office Commission of Historians.

Dr. Walter H. Pehle, 2003 Honorary Professor for Contemporary History, born 1941 in Düsseldorf; studied History, German and Philosophy at the Universities of Cologne, Bonn and Düsseldorf; Ph. D. under Wolfgang Mommsen 1976. Since 1976 reader for history for the Publishing House S. Fischer and Fischer paperback. Since 1988 editor of the Series "The Time of National Socialism" (the so called "Black Series"), since 1996 also responsible editor of the Series "European History".
Coordinated by the Institute of Contemporary History, he has been lecturer of the University of Innsbruck within the elective study course "Medien in Theorie and Praxis" focusing on the "History of the Book from Ancient Times to the Present", "Scholars from Arts and Humanities in Publishing Companies" and "Work in a modern Publishing Company".
Holder of the "Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany" (2001) and of the "Goethe-Badge" of the city of Frankfurt am Main (1997).
