Synopsis

The present research project focuses on the improvement of efficient fish protection and guiding systems at hydropower plants with low head as well as on the inflow to these structures and the turbines.

Project description

The further expansion of hydropower has to meet ecological requirements. Particularly, the safe downstream passage of fish has to be guaranteed in case new hydropower plants are constructed as well as existing ones are adapted. Therefore, it is essential to guide fish safely to a bypass system by technical means. For a professional evaluation of the fish protection systems, the necessary hydraulic background is still lacking. The aim of the present research project is to assess these fundamentals by utilization of numerical modelling and physical scale model tests. These will be evaluated regarding fish behavior aspects and the effects on the efficiency of the power plant. Moreover, further scientifically highly relevant issues concerning fish protection at hydropower plants with low head will be examined. Consequently, the study will provide the necessary knowledge to derive recommendations for the sustainable expansion of hydropower.
