On the Prediction of Weak-Field Effects in Linearized General Relativity

Abstract. It is shown that there is a version of linearized general relativity which is, contrary to the usual one, not contained in the Hilbert gauge class, but is able to correctly predict the gravitational (solar-system) effects due to weak, static fields, the perihelion advance of planets (here a weak-field effect) included. Correspondingly, also the properties of weak, time-dependent fields (especially gravitational waves) differ significantly from those predicted in the usual version of linearized general relativity.
