World University Sport Climbing Championship

The University of Innsbruck will host the World University Sport Climbing Championship

In 2022, the University of Innsbruck will host the World University Championship Sport Climbing. After the Winter Universiade in 2005, a major university sports event will once again take place in Austria.

The University of Innsbruck was chosen to host the World University Championship Sport Climbing 2022 (WUC Sport Climbing 2022). The application was made in summer 2019 in accordance with the regulations of the Fédération Internationale du Sport Universitaire (FISU) from the Unisport Austria national university sports organisation, together with the University of Innsbruck, represented by the University Sports Institute (USI) and the Austrian Climbing Association.

„In the heart of the Alps, sport is a central topic in Innsbruck. I am very pleased that the University of Innsbruck will once again be the venue for an international university competition. The athletes competing for the University of Innsbruck will compete with the best in the world, just like our researchers do. Professional sport and research connect people internationally with their abilities, ideas and goals in different disciplines. I wish all those responsible the very best for the preparation of this event“,

says Tilmann Märk, Rector of the University of Innsbruck.

Upcoming sport

Sport climbing, which has been in strong demand among students,  was added to the FISU competition programme in 2013. The first World Championship was held in Shanghai in 2016, for 2018 Bratislava and for 2020 Torino were chosen as venues. Helmut Weichselbaumer, head of the University Sports Institute Innsbruck, is looking forward to the University World Championship with big expectations:

„With the award for the 2022 Student World Championship Sport Climbing 2022 in Innsbruck by the FISU University World Association, we have succeeded in setting another milestone in international competitive sports at the University of Innsbruck. With the Austrian Climbing Association, we have been able to win a partner for the operative implementation, who can guarantee a quality standard at the highest level, thanks to its experience in organising major international events. It is our common goal to offer an unforgettable experience to the world’s best students, athletes in sport climbing as well as everyone involved and the spectators on site.”

Just like at the successfully held IFSC Climbing World Championships Innsbruck Tirol 2018 at the Innsbruck climbing centre, athletes will compete in the disciplines of boulder, lead and speed. The Institute for Sport Science at the University of Innsbruck will support the WUC Sport Climbing 2022 on a scientific level by holding a Young Researcher Seminar, as was the case in the preparation phase for the Winter Universiade Innsbruck / Seefeld 2005. Hemma Angerer, president of Unisport Austria:

„It is nice that we have been chosen by the FISU to host the WUC Sport Climbing Innsbruck 2022. This way Austria can make a contribution to the university sport world-wide and present Innsbruck on an international level as a university and sport town. I am pleased that the University of Innsbruck and the Austrian Climbing Association are actively working with Unisport Austria in a motivated way“

Michael Schöpf, Sports Manager of the Austrian Climbing Association, adds:

“We are particularly pleased that, after the successful World Climbing Championships 2018, we, in cooperation with Unisport Austria and the University of Innsbruck, were able to bring the world’s most important climbing event in university sports to Innsbruck / Austria. Climbing is a sport that is very popular across all generations and social classes. Climbing is particularly popular with students. Many of our active or former national team athletes are students at the University of Innsbruck. We are therefore particularly pleased to implement this project operationally with the University of Innsbruck and Unisport Austria.“
