Workflow to the admission procedure for the Academic Year 2014/2015

  Workflow

If you are interested in the Bachelor’s Programme Architecture it is important to be aware of the following conditions: Each academic year, the University of Innsbruck makes the following number of study places available:  290 (minus 9 for "incoming students"). In order to obtain one of these places of study, you need to complete the following steps:

STEP 1 – online registration, letter of motivation, self assessment:

  1. Open an LFU online account. This will give you access to the University of Innsbruck computer system, which you will need for the next steps.
[Registration begins on 1st March 2014]

  2. Enter your data into the system, write a letter of motivation and register for the bachelor’s programme Architecture.

  3. The letter of motivation should consist of a maximum of 2.200 characters (incl. blank characters) – approximately 300 words – and the emphasis on predefined keywords. Its objective is to provide you with an impression of whether the Bachelor’s Programme Architecture suit you or not. If you have been admitted as a regular student the letter of motivation will be discussed with you within the Studies Induction and Orientation Stage (STEOP). It is entirely up to you what you do with the results of the online self assessment. Regardless of whether they are "good" or "bad" – they have no influence on you being granted a place of study or not.

  4. When you have completed your registration and your Online Self Assessment (OSA), you will receive an automated feedback on how your rating of the keywords compares with the rating done by the Faculty of Architecture. This, however, has no influence whatsoever on whether you will be awarded a place in Architecture or not!

STEP 2 – number of registration > 281 – Admission Test

An admission test (step 2) has been planned for 7th July 2014. The word "planned" is used because the admission test will be cancelled, if there are fewer registered applicants than available places of study (281).

If the admission test is necessary, i.e. there are more applicants than places, you will receive timely information about the venue and time of the test after the registration deadline.

ADMISSION TEST

The admission test will be in writing and consists at least of a knowledge test, but may be supplemented with a cognitive and/or analytical test. If there is a cognitive and/or analytical test, no special preparation will be needed. The topics covered by the knowledge test are fairly limited and can be easily accessed (mainly through the internet). You should be able to pass it with your knowledge from school and the sources stated below. The internet sources will give you information on concrete terminology but will also guide you through topics that – at first glance – might not appear relevant for architecture. These sources are intended to give you an idea of what might turn up in your studies or in your work as an architect and give you an incentive to read on and browse the wide field of architecture. 3 to 4 days of preparation/research should suffice.

METHOD AND CONTENT OF THE ADMISSION TEST

  • The admission test is a multiple choice test in writing.

  • The sources are divided in 2 groups, with the group “Essential information & materials” containing information relevant for the actual test. The group “Further reading/materials” offers additional information on the wide field of architecture. The knowledge dealt with in the second group is not required to pass the test but is useful to better understand the topics from the group “Essential information”.

  • Only the contents of the specific links will be part of the admission test; other pages (even within the same website) or hyperlinks will not be part of the test.

  • You will not be asked for exact dates, you only need to know the centuries or epochs.

  • You will not be asked for birth dates or other biographical details.

  • You will not be asked for chronological data or catalogues. However, it is useful to know about the history of some important architectural works to answer the questions. These works are dealt with extensively in the sources (mostly also with photographs).

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA OF THE ADMISSION TEST

The multiple choice questions must be answered by ticking the right answers. As is usual for multiple choice tests, you will not be told how many answers must be ticked, i.e. one or more or even all items may be correct. To avoid arbitrary ticking of all answers, wrong answers will be given negative points. The sum of points awarded for correct answers equals the total of points subtracted for wrong answers. It is not possible to reach less than zero points.

The participants of the admission test will be ranked in descending order according to their overall points. The first 281 applicants will be awarded a place in the bachelor’s programme Architecture.
