including a colloquium of the Innsbruck-Vienna SFB “Foundations and Applications of Quantum Science (FoQuS)”

Organizers:

Rudolf Grimm and Francesca Ferlaino (Univ. Innsbruck and IQOQI)

Secretary:

Sabine Hofer, sp-physik@uibk.ac.at

Scope of the Course

The short course on 07-09 July 2015 will give a basic introduction into the fascinating research field of cold atoms and ultracold quantum gases, which offers many exciting research opportunities for young researchers. The course is addressed to students finishing their bachelor degree or early in their master program and first year PhD students. The course does not require any special knowledge on the field besides basic knowledge of quantum physics and atomic, molecular, and optical physics.

Program

Thirteen lectures given by experts from Innsbruck, Vienna, and Trento will cover the main topics like laser cooling and trapping, Bose-Einstein condensation, ultracold Fermi gases, ultracold molecules, strongly correlated quantum gases, and optical lattices. In addition, students will be given the opportunity to visit state-of-the art laboratories at the University of Innsbruck and the Institute of Quantum Optics and Quantum Information (IQOQI).

The course includes also two events: On 08 July, participants will have the opportunity to meet and discuss with the Nobel Laureate John L. Hall about recent research avenues and to enjoy the beautiful Tyrolean mountains in an evening hiking (barbecue at Arzler Alm). On 09 July, the participants are invited to attend a colloquium where further overviews of SFB research will be presented. The program ends with a public lecture by René Beigang to celebrate the International Year of Light, followed by an open buffet.

Program

Participants

In addition to students from the three member universities of the SFB (Univ. Innsbruck, Univ. Vienna, and Univ. of Technology, Vienna), we invite external students to participate. We will be able to sponsor the participation of about 30 external students, covering their local expenses and supporting their travel expenses for a maximum of 200 euros.

Application

Application form can be downloaded here.

Please fill in and return the form to us (sp-physik@uibk.ac.at) before the application deadline of 05 June 2015. The applicants are requested to arrange for a recommendation letter to be sent to us by e-mail by professors from their home universities. Applications will be notified on their acceptance no later than 11 June 2015.

Support

The school is sponsored by the SFB project "Foundations and applications of quantum science" (FoQus), the Innsbruck Physics Research Center (University of Innsbruck) and the Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information (IQOQI). The accomodation will be organized by the Research Center.

Venue

The school will take place in the Technik Campus of the University of Innsbruck. This campus is located on the west side of the city, close to the airport.

For information on how to reach the campus please use the following link:

The map below shows the relevant locations on campus.

The first meeting place, for the reception and get-together on Monday evening at 8pm, is the 3rd floor of the IQOQI building. The lectures will be held in lecture hall C in the Viktor-Franz-Hess-Haus (see map
below).

ATTENTION: due to construction work at "Kranebitterallee" and "Technikerstrasse" the busline O as well as LK take another route (the bus still stops at "Hötting West") - more details about alternative bus
stops etc. are available here:
