Scope of the Course

Our Introductory Course from 08–10 July 2019 will give a basic introduction into the fascinating research field of cold atoms and ultracold quantum gases, which offers many exciting opportunities for young researchers. The course is addressed to students early in their master’s program and is also suitable for students just finishing their bachelor’s degree and first-year PhD students who have recently joined the field.  Specialized knowledge in the field is not required; students should have a basic knowledge of quantum physics and atomic, molecular, and optical physics at the undergraduate level.

Program

Thirteen lectures given by experts from Innsbruck, Vienna, Munich, and Trento will cover the basic concepts of laser cooling and trapping, Bose-Einstein condensation, ultracold Fermi gases, ultracold molecules, strongly correlated quantum gases, and optical lattices. In addition, students will be given the opportunity to visit state-of-the-art laboratories at the University of Innsbruck and the Institute of Quantum Optics and Quantum Information (IQOQI).

The school will start on Monday morning, 08 July with the registration at the groundfloor of the ICT-building. The lectures will conclude at midday on 10 July.

The program includes a social event in the beautiful Tyrolean mountains (barbecue at Arzler Alm) in the evening of Tuesday, 09 July. Students will depart Innsbruck on 10 July (An additional night at the Kolpinghaus is possible, but it will not be funded by the school).

Confirmed speakers of the Summer School:

  • Mikhail Baranov (IQOQI Innsbruck)
  • Francesca Ferlaino (Institute for Experimental Physics, University of Innsbruck; IQOQI Innsbruck)
  • Rudolf Grimm (Institute for Experimental Physics, University of Innsbruck; IQOQI Innsbruck)

Participants

In addition to local students, we invite external students to participate. We will be able to sponsor the participation of about 30 external students, covering travel costs of up to maximum 200 euros per participant as well as accommodation, including breakfast. The accomodation will be organized by the Research Center. All external students are accomodated at the Kolpinghaus Innsbruck.

Application

Please complete the online form before the application deadline of 07 June 2019. Also, please arrange for a letter of recommendation (which can be just a short e-mail message) to be sent to Ms. Sabine Hofer Brigo at sp-physik@uibk.ac.at by the application deadline. Applications will be notified on their acceptance no later than 13 June 2019.
