Scope of the Course

The short course from 10–12 July 2018 will give an introduction to the fascinating field of quantum information, which offers many exciting research opportunities for young scientists. The course is addressed to students early in their master’s program and is also suitable for students just finishing their bachelor’s degree and first-year PhD students who have recently joined the field. Specialized knowledge in the field is not required; students should have a background in quantum physics, atomic, molecular, and optical physics at the undergraduate level.

Program

Fourteen lectures given by experts from Innsbruck and Vienna will cover the basic concepts of quantum information, quantum computation, and implementations of quantum information processing in various systems. In addition, students will be given the opportunity to visit state-of-the-art laboratories at the University of Innsbruck and the Institute of Quantum Optics and Quantum Information (IQOQI).

The school will start on the evening of Monday, 9th of July with registration and a get-together. The lectures will conclude at midday on the 12th of July.

In the afternoon of July 12th, participants are invited to attend a colloquium where overviews of current research in the Innsbruck-Vienna SFB will be presented. The program ends with a joint social event in the beautiful Tyrolean mountains (barbecue at Arzler Alm) in the evening.

Students will depart Innsbruck on the 13th of July and are also welcome to attend more specialized colloquium talks on Friday morning.

Confirmed speakers:

  • Lauriane Chomaz (Institute for Experimental Physics & IQOQI Innsbruck)
  • Gemma de las Cuevas (Institute for Theoretical Physics, University of Innsbruck)
  • Markus Huber (IQOQI Vienna)

Program (with SFB)

Participants

In addition to students from the three member universities of the SFB (University of Innsbruck, University of Vienna, and Vienna University of Technology), we invite external students to participate. We will be able to sponsor the participation of about 30 external students, covering travel costs of up to 200 euros per participant as well as accommodation, including breakfast.

Application

Please complete the online form before the application deadline 3rd of June 2018. Also, please arrange for a letter of recommendation (which can be just a short e-mail message) to be sent to Ms. Sabine Hofer Brigo at sp-physik@uibk.ac.at by the application deadline. Applications will be notified on their acceptance no later than the 11th of June 2018.

Support

The school is sponsored by the SFB project "Foundations and Applications of Quantum Science" (FoQuS), the Innsbruck Physics Research Center (University of Innsbruck) and the Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information.  Accommodation will be arranged by the Research Center.

Venue

The school will take place at the Technik Campus of the University of Innsbruck. This campus is located on the west side of the city, close to the airport.
