including a colloquium of the Innsbruck-Vienna SFB “Foundations and Applications of Quantum Science (FoQuS)”

Organizers:

Nicolai Friis (Institute for Theoretical Physics, University of Innsbruck)
Tracy Northup (Institute for Experimental Physics, University of Innsbruck)
Christian Roos (IQOQI Innsbruck)

Secretary:

Sabine Hofer sp-physik@uibk.ac.at

Scope of the Course

The short course from 12–14 July 2016 will give an introduction to the fascinating field of quantum information, which offers many exciting opportunities for young researchers. The course is addressed to students early in their master’s program and is also suitable for students just finishing their bachelor’s degree and first-year PhD students who have recently joined the field.  Specialized knowledge in the field is not required; students should have a background in quantum physics and atomic, molecular, and optical physics at the undergraduate level.

Program

Fourteen lectures given by experts from Innsbruck, Vienna and abroad will cover the basic concepts of quantum information, quantum computation, and implementations of quantum information processing in various systems. In addition, students will be given the opportunity to visit state-of-the-art laboratories at the University of Innsbruck and the Institute of Quantum Optics and Quantum Information (IQOQI).

The school will start on the evening of Monday, 11 July with registration and a get-together. The lectures will conclude at midday on 14 July.

In the afternonn of 14 July, participants in the course are invited to attend a colloquium where overviews of current research in the Innsbruck-Vienna SFB will be presented. The program of the intensive course ends with a joint social event in the beautiful Tyrolean mountains (barbecue at Arzler Alm) in the evening of Thursday, 14 July. Students will depart Innsbruck on 15 July and are also welcome to attend the more specialized SFB colloquium talks on the morning of Friday, 15 July.

Tentative Program

Participants

In addition to students from the three member universities of the SFB (University o Innsbruck, University of Vienna, and Vienna Unversity of Technology), we invite external students to participate. We will be able to sponsor the participation of about 30 external students, covering travel costs of up to 200 euros per participant as well as accommodation, including breakfast.

Application

Please complete the online form before the application deadline of 1 June 2016. Also, please arrange for a letter of recommendation (which can be just a short e-mail message) to be sent to Ms. Sabine Hofer Brigo at sp-physik@uibk.ac.at by the application deadline. Applications will be notified on their acceptance no later than 8 June 2016.

Support

The school is sponsored by the SFB project "Foundations and Applications of Quantum Science" (FoQus), the Innsbruck Physics Research Center (University of Innsbruck) and the Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information (IQOQI). The accomodation will be organized by the Research Center.

Venue

The school will take place at the Technik Campus of the University of Innsbruck. This campus is located on the west side of the city, close to the airport.
