... into empirical and experimental economics! Celebrating the 350th anniversary of the University of Innsbruck and 250 years Economics in Innsbruck, we are looking forward to three top events: On Monday, 18 March 2019 and Tuesday, 19 March 2019, the 37th Böhm-Bawerk lecture, the event "Research for an (Economic) Future" and the 7th eeecon lecture will take place. Below you find a short summary of the respective format as well as further links.
37. Böhm-Bawerk lecture (held in English)
The Böhm-Bawerk lecture series was founded in 1980 by Prof. Dr. Christian Smekal, then Dean of the Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences.
The guest of the 37th edition of the Böhm-Bawerk lecture is George Loewenstein. He helped to found the field of behavioral economics, the field of neuroeconomics, and was one of the early proponents of a new approach to public policy called, variously, ‘asymmetric’ or ‘libertarian’ paternalism. He has published over 200 journal articles in journals in economics, psychology, law, medicine and other fields, numerous book chapters, has written or edited 6 books on topics ranging from intertemporal choice to behavioral economics and emotions, and has served on the editorial boards of numerous journals in different fields. He received numerous grants and awards, from government agencies such as the NIH, NSF, USDA, and from foundations, such as the John D. and Catherine T. McArthur Foundation, the Hewlett Foundation, the Russell Sage Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, and many others.
Research for an (economic) future (held in German)
How can environmental disasters be managed economically? What do car mechanics, taxi drivers and doctors have in common? Why do speculative bubbles arise? Does money make you happy?
The economists at the University of Innsbruck are dealing with these and many other questions. With a lot of economic curiosity and a colourful mix of methods, they try to gain new insights. We would like to invite them on stage to talk about their everyday research life and to discuss their findings with you. Even after 250 years of economic activity in Innsbruck, there are still many challenges for an economic future that we face. Loukas Balafoutas, Michael Kirchler, Gottfried Tappeiner and Hannelore Weck-Hannemann, moderated by Juliane Nagiller (Ö1 Science Editor), will present their research areas on behalf of the scientists working on empirical and experimental economics at the University of Innsbruck. Questions and comments are welcome.
7th eeecon lecture (held in German)
Martin Kocher will give a lecture on "What Influences (Un)Moral Behaviour in Economics?" as part of the renowned guest lecture series of the research platform Empirical and Experimental Economics. He will present empirical evidence on immoral behavior. In particular, the lecture will deal with the framework conditions that promote or prevent immoral behaviour in economics and society. It turns out that many people follow moral norms, even if these lead to financial disadvantages. However, the norms themselves are relatively flexible, and the decision-making environment has a great influence on how moral norms are interpreted. Findings from empirical studies help to better understand past economic scandals and avoid them more easily in the future.
