Tiroler Wissenschaftspreis 2019

Tiroler Wissenschaftsförderung for Helena Fornwagner

On 17 January 2019, this year's award ceremony of the Tiroler Wissenschaftsförderung took place in the Kaiser-Leopold-Saal. A total of 53 projects by researchers from Tyrolean universities are financially supported by the state of Tyrol. Among them is a project by Helena Fornwagner. Congratulations!

Helena Fornwagner received the Tiroler Wissenschaftsförderung for the project called "ES IST MEHR ALS NUR DER BAUCH: Eine Studie zu ökonomischem und sozialem Verhalten von Schwangeren", investigating the economic behavior of pregnant women.

How being pregnant changes women from a biological, physiological, psychological and neurological perspective has already been investigated by numerous scientific studies. However, there is very scarce literature focusing on the economic behavior of pregnant women.

The aim of this study is to fill diverse gaps in this literature by investigating how certain fundamental economic preferences change due to a pregnancy. In this study we will focus on risk preferences, time preferences, and social (distributional) preferences. For this purpose, we will conduct simple economic experiments with women who are pregnant for the first time. These experiments will be accompanied by simple psychological questionnaires and the collection of demographic data, in order to have a complete picture of the factors influencing diverse aspects of pregnant women’s economic decisions.

One important goal of this project is to communicate the findings to medical and economic experts, so as to increase the knowledge in the respective fields. In addition, the results should lead to a better general understanding of pregnant women’s behavior and improve the support that they receive during the exciting time of their first pregnancy.
